Two switches can have the same eight Gigabit ports and two SFP ports — but they do not solve the same problem.
The difference emerges when the network needs not only to be connected, but also managed.

For a stable topology, an unmanaged switch offers plug-and-play connectivity without additional configuration. When the project requires management, industrial protocols or static IPv6 routing, the choice changes.

TSW212 is the managed option for projects where three criteria need to be considered:
• L2 capabilities and additional L3 functions, including a DHCPv6 client and static IPv6 routing;
• support for PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and MRP;
• eight Gigabit Ethernet ports and two SFP ports for fiber-optic communication.

A managed switch is not automatically necessary in every panel. It becomes justified when integration and configuration requirements go beyond simply connecting the equipment.

In your projects, which criterion justifies moving from plug-and-play to management: PROFINET, MRP, IPv6 requirements or the fiber topology?
