You are adding isolation to an existing 4…20 mA loop.
Is there enough voltage left for the entire circuit?
Hypothetical modernisation scenario: the team needs to galvanically isolate process signals from the new PLC inputs. It follows each signal path and checks the voltage budget before choosing the isolator.
PR 3185A2 from PR electronics offers three useful functions in this scenario:
• it galvanically separates signal circuits to eliminate ground loops;
• it repeats the current signal at a 1:1 ratio, preserving the 4…20 mA range;
• it is loop-powered, without a dedicated auxiliary supply.
The team can integrate the isolator without adding a separate power supply. When sizing the circuit, it checks the available voltage and the load connected to the output.
In your modernisation projects, how do you check the voltage margin before adding an isolator to the loop?
